Founded in 1949, the founder members included Bob Caws, Michael Attrill, Paul Lingeman, Hubert Coombes and Ernest Wade, who along with others held their first meeting in one of the houseboats, ‘Vanessa’, moored along the Embankment.
Early BHYC documents noted rather quaintly that one of the aims from the start was “to ensure that membership was open to all, with no barriers of social standing or occupation’, and this guiding principle has been applied throughout the Club’s long history - we are open to everyone and pride ourselves on our friendliness.
Soon after its’ formation the Club adopted a One-Design sailing dinghy - the Solent Scow - and many were built locally by A A Coombes. In 1960 a larger boat was adopted, the Bembridge Swan, with its’ distinctive sail insignia.
Many other dinghy designs have since been sailed and raced at the Club, including Mirrors, Lasers, Toppers, Solos, Picos and Fevas to name just a few.
